Food for Life: Goodbye, Comorbidities, A Five Class Series:
Want to have fun while taking care of your health? Most people think you have to give up flavor and fun to change to a healthy relationship with food. In this series, you will learn the opposite is true. These recipes are fun and easy to follow and TASTY, and you get your health back! Sadly, Covid-19 has had truly devastating effects on so many people around the world. The CDC has advised that people with underlying health conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease) are at a higher risk to have severe outcomes from this disease. Are you feeling helpless in the face of this pandemic? The good news is that diet plays an important role in optimizing the immune system and greatly improving these chronic health conditions.
Class 1: Saturday, July 18th, 1-3 PM: Antioxidants for a Well-Tuned Immune System
Antioxidants support the body’s immune system to work just right; not hyperactive yet ready to fight if needed. These amazing compounds are mainly found in fruits and vegetables and assist in halting free-radical damage. Scientific research shows vegetarians have double the natural killer cell activity compared with non-vegetarians and enjoy a calmer immune system suffering less from allergies and autoimmune diseases. This class will explore foods that are rich in protective compounds and immune-boosting nutrients such as beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamin C, and zinc.
Class 2: Saturday, July 25th, 1-3 PM: Foods for Greater Insulin Sensitivity
Diabetes is a significant co-morbidity which can increase risk for a more serious illness when exposed to Covid-19. Low-fat plant based recipes can reverse insulin resistance and are a powerful tool to manage, treat and often times reverse diabetes. In this class, you will learn simple dishes that will lower insulin resistance, keep you balanced and these recipes are affordable, satisfying and delicious.
Class 3: Saturday, August 1st, 1-3 PM: Foods for a Strong and Healthy Heart
Diets rich in saturated fat and cholesterol cause plaque buildup in the arteries, restricting blood flow. Eating heart-healthy foods, as demonstrated by Dean Ornish, MD, Caldwell Esselstyn Jr, MD, and others prevents and even reverses heart and cardiovascular disease. The healing starts in days, even hours. Being sick with Covid-19 puts a big burden on the heart. Let’s care for the heart and the whole vascular system with delicious meals.
Class 4: Saturday, August 15th, 1-3 PM: Food, Fiber, and a Healthy Weight
Maintaining a healthy weight is essential for warding off a variety of chronic diseases. Obesity is also linked to more severe outcomes of Covid-19. Studies have shown that slimmer people are less likely to develop diabetes and cancer, compared with their heavier counterparts. This class will discuss and demonstrate fiber- and nutrient-rich dishes that will help you achieve and then maintain a healthy weight.
Class 5: Saturday, August 22nd, 1-3 PM: Greens & Co. for Healthy Blood Pressure
The World Health Organization says hypertension (high blood pressure) is “the most preventable cause of premature death in developed countries.” It is also one of the underlying health issues that contributes to the ravages of Covid-19. The good news is that plant-based diets can help lower high blood pressure within a short time frame.
